Thoughts – Smoking Around Playgrounds and Schools Should be Illegal!

Ban on Smoking

Image via Wikipedia

Today at the Charleston County Soccer Field in West Ashley, I noticed a number of people who were smoking cigarettes around the fields.  One lady was smoking right on the field, and some were smoking near the concession stand.   We all know the dangers of second-hand smoke … and we know what this can do to our children, yet we continue to allow this type of behavior in our environments.  I’m not saying ban smoking everywhere, but no one should be smoking in these type of public places.  It is very disrespectful to the children, and is a health hazard.  Why do we continue to allow this?  We have some pretty stupid laws on the book already, why not pass a law that actually makes sense?  If you are smoking in these areas … schools, public parks, playgrounds, etc you should be fined at least $50, second offense $200, and a third offense $1000.  Maybe then these people will respect other’s people’s rights just as much as they want us to protect and respect theirs!!
